This island won my heart years ago, when a friend I'd met while teaching cooking in Australia invited me to her new home in Crete. I could not board a flight fast enough! Her place was located in Plaka, a lovely seaside hamlet on the shores of Elounda Bay, and just a step from tavernas, quaint shops, and a sugary beach lined with fishing boats.
I'll never forget picking olives, crushing them between stones, and curing them. Or waking up to the sound of fishermen slapping freshly caught octopus and savoring their catch, freshly grilled and oh-so-tender later that night.
The food was so delicious and so simple. Memories of robust Cretan olive oil, crisp minerally white wine, sumptuous feta cheese, and flaky filo dough filled with savory fillings and fresh herbs, still make my mouth water! Add the island's fascinating history, authentic charm and sweeping vistas, and I was hooked.
