Here in California, between the Atmospheric Rivers, Cyclone Bombs, and Hawaiian Express, we sure have had an intense start to the new year. To friends from coast to coast and everywhere between, we deserve a nice relaxing evening and some heart-warming comfort food, am I right?
I’m thinking of a full-on fire blazing in the fireplace, a sweater and slouchy sweats, and a Netflix marathon-worthy type dinner-- like a simple Chicken Paprikash that’s served on a pile of steamy egg noodles. I’ll pair it with a nice glass or two of California Merlot, or if I can get my hands on a bottle of Kékfrancos, it will transport Joe and I straight back to Budapest. Hmm- maybe we need a good spy-film, like Red Sparrow, to round out the night?!
Another night, I should make a huge pot of soup and invite friends over to watch—you guessed it- Tortilla Soup! Or, we could have spicy vegetarian chili and stream some old spaghetti Westerns. Speaking of spaghetti, now I’m craving homemade meatballs with ricotta that are so tender they’ll melt in your mouth. This calls for a bottle of Chianti Classico and Stanley Tucci in Big Night.
Joe loves my Eggs in Purgatory recipe, and it’s SO incredible simple and yummy. So, we could have that along with some Pinot Noir while watching, I don’t know, Sam Shepard in Purgatory or even Groundhog Day? Or, perhaps we should really turn things on their head and make my version of “Beer Can Chicken”. We should stream something that’s equally fun, like There’s Something About Mary or The Princess Bride.
To cap off the night, we need some chocolate, but I’m thinking of a nice creamy pave, not s’mores (if you haven’t seen The Menu yet, just trust me here;). To watch? I’ll go with Chocolat.
