When my dear friend Elias first told me about the Greek island of Syros and his family’s history there, his passion was clear. So, I'm thrilled that he and his family have offered to serve as our guides on a Culinary Tour that will truly be an "insider's" peek at the best the island offers.
So many places in Greece touch my heart, and Syros is right up there on top. Located in the heart of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea and just an easy ferry ride or flight away from Athens, this island is truly idyllic. Maybe it's the azure water, gorgeous beaches, and delicious regional dishes. Or it could be the island's rich history. Yet, what I truly love about Syros is the people. This is a place where you just feel drawn in by their warmth and hospitality from the moment you arrive. I can't wait to share this experience with you on this special tour!
Syros boasts a richly diverse cuisine, so we'll be sure to sample local delicacies, like their robust, yet slightly sweet sausages and savory pies. Oh, and a few friends of Elias happen to make the island's most famous cheese, so we'll have to pay them a visit! And I can't wait for you to see how they make these soft little squares of sweet flavor coated in powdered sugar called loukoumia.
These flavors will inspire us, so we'll head into the kitchen where we'll cook with the island's fragrant herbs and bountiful seafood. We could even head to the Mandrais family's beautiful new restaurant on the shores of one of the island's most spectacular beaches to learn how to prepare modern riffs on authentic regional classics.
I have so much more in store for you on this memorable excursion, and while I don't want to spoil the surprise, wine lovers are in for an incredible experience exploring the island’s “Wine Trail” and tasting with a local winemaker. And you won’t believe the party that Elias and I are planning for our last evening. Think music and the intoxicating aromas of something delicious roasting on a spit as the sun sets over the sea… It’s going to be over-the-top!
The Greek way of life is extraordinary, and this tour will be unforgettable. Whether you’re traveling solo, or with a loved one or two, I promise that by the end of the week, you will feel like you’ve found a new family on the island of Syros.
