Growing up in New England, I used to visit my grandfather’s farm with my mom. We’d sit on the porch and I’d ask, “What’s over the hill, Mom?” She would always say the same thing, “That’s California!” And, of course it got my imagination running and made me curious about the world, which is why as an adult, I've set out to explore so many amazing places, and bring those experiences back to my kitchen.
Yet, after filming my show for so many years, I realized that I've never actually shared the amazing city in which I now live: San Francisco. So, drumroll please....tune in for a very special episode of Plates & Places this Thursday night on KQED and discover some of my favorite local culinary finds!
You can seriously get just about anything in the Bay Area, yet ingredients aside, there is also a sense of community around food that binds us together. So in this special episode, come along and we'll pick persimmons in backyards along the Peninsula with a wonderful organization harvesting excess produce and sharing it with those in need. We'll also gather ingredients at my friends' 3rd generation Italian market, and come home in time to meet the farmer delivering my weekly box of locally grown produce!
Then, you'll meet my friends Maddy and Ellis (who also happen to be tenants with whom I'm lucky enough to share my home) and together, we'll create a casual meal using techniques from the heart of Italy! We'll assemble a colorful salad with fennel, arugula, persimmon, toasted hazelnut and prosciutto. And we'll roll handmade pasta into the most endearing shapes and toss it with a delicious, simple tomato sauce and freshly grated Grana Padano cheese. For dessert, we'll make an upside-down blood orange cake that's scented with orange essence and topped with whipped mascarpone. Once you try it, you'll feel like you brought a slice of Sicily to your kitchen table!
This show is all about food and friends and I can't wait to share my home, local finds and these new recipes with you!
Stay in touch and let me know what you think.
