When I was growing up, store-bought prepared foods or anything from a box had no place in our kitchen. My mom made everything from scratch, a fact that was made abundantly clear to me one day as we were shopping at the A&P.
As we walked from aisle to aisle, I realized that I was starving. It was the kind of hunger that made my head feel so light that I felt like I was in the clouds.
“Mom, can we get a can of New England clam chowder?” I begged, as I was about to keel over. I wanted nothing more than to go home, use the electric can opener to open that can, pour that chunky, thick, flour-laden clam chowder into a pan, add some milk, and in seconds have a steaming bowl of soup.
She looked at me, her eyes bulging, as if I’d said a bad word. “No, I’ll buy a can of clams. I have everything at home to make homemade chowder.”
She grabbed a can of clams from the shelf, put it into the cart, and we headed toward the checkout. I realized at that moment that I was never going to be like all of the other lucky kids with kitchen cabinets full of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese and Campbell’s Tomato Soup.
Once home, and after putting the groceries away, my mom whipped up a pot of the best clam chowder I had ever tasted. In a matter of minutes, she’d combined that can of clams with onions, potatoes, cream, and milk. The aroma was intoxicating. Sure, I was about to pass out from hunger, but I sat down and dove into an enormous bowl of Mom’s creamy chowder, I realized that I was the lucky kid.
