I’m married to a man who loves to scour the television guide to find out which episodes of Plates and Places are airing. The other day, he called me from the other room to come quickly. When I ran to see what the fuss was about, there on the screen was yours truly, along with my friend Elias. We were sitting seaside at Ono Beach Club on the gorgeous Greek island of Syros. Situated smack dab in the South Aegean Sea, we plucked fresh sea urchins, doused them with tomato juice and sprinkled them with sea salt gathered from the crevices in the rocks.
I sat and watched for a few minutes with Joe who was sitting right next to me. “Oh, I would give anything to be there right now,” I said, “I love that island!”
Syros is a very special place. Yes, it’s about the beaches, the beautiful blue water, the whitewashed villages, the conviviality and hospitality of the people and of course, it’s also about the fabulous food!
Syros is more than horiatiki (aka Greek salad), gyros and souvlaki. Don’t get me wrong, they have that too, but for decades the island’s capitol city of Hermoupolis served as a major Mediterranean port and the cuisine is incredibly diverse. Traditional dishes include a savory pie made with the freshest fish and vegetables, cabbage leaves stuffed with rice, dill, mint and raisins and the most delicious fennel, spinach and pork sausage pie, Yet the flavor journey doesn’t stop there. Syrosians love their sweets and make the best candy; Turkish delight called loukoumia--my favorite being one scented with rose, and creamy nougat sandwiched between what seems like two church wafers called halvadopita. Oh, and I don't think I could ever forget the flavorful Moussaka I enjoyed at Petrino Restaurant!
As I sat and watched the show with Joe, I yearned to be there. “What would you like for dinner, honey?” I asked knowing full well the menu was going to be something Greek.
