I’m loving this appetizer/dinner board kick that’s all the rage right now. Who wouldn’t love some tasty small bites arranged just so on a big wooden board? But I’m not talking about an everyday cheese platter. I’m taking this board notion up a couple of notches.
Picture this: a montage of sweet, savory, salty, colorful, crunchy and creamy bites arranged just so on a big board decorated with fresh fig leaves, walnuts, pecans, dried apricots and figs and bright red pomegranates. Add an array of well-selected cheeses, cured meats and maybe even some membrillo or quince paste with a basket of assorted bread and a few crackers alongside and a few things made from scratch. The options are endless!
In fact, while we were filming for the new season of shows, I suddenly discovered that I was assembling variations on this theme for 3 separate episodes!! Season 3 will begin airing in January, but in case you are scrambling for ideas for your next holiday party, here are a few of my favorite tips:
- Work with a theme: Spanish tapas, Italian, Greek, you name it!! Select cheese, meats and small bites from your favorite region and instantly give your board some flair.
- Make room!! Use a wood board, platter, chalkboard, or cutting board that will allow all of your items to shine and give guests enough room to easily make their selections.
- Less is more - too many options can be overwhelming, so when it comes to cheese, pick just a few different types and don’t hesitate to ask your local cheese monger for ideas!
- And there’s no shame in getting some store-bought items that are ready to go. Just put some love into the presentation and add some creativity and if time permits, make a homemade spread with dried figs or a dish of warm olives with aromatique herbs and a bit of citrus zest!
