“My grandfather Papa Jonas was always out in the fields or in the barn milking the cows. The highlight of summer was when he’d pick an armful of the most tender Butter & Sugar corn and bring it directly from the field into the kitchen. Mama Anna would fill a big blue-and-white enamel pot with water, add a handful of salt, and bring it to a boil. She would drop in the corn and it would be ready in minutes. As she lifted the corn from the pot, you could see a mosaic of yellow and white through the steam. This was the only time we could run our hot ears of corn directly over Mama’s ultra-salty chunk of homemade butter, leaving a groove that showed that corn had been there. Just thinking about that corn makes my mouth water!”
