Culinary Journeys to Italy with Joanne Weir
Venice and the Veneto, Italy

May 21-27, 2018 | $5,800 US pp**

Every may and October I pack my bags and head to my very favorite part of the world, the Mediterranean.  I love everything about it especially the Veneto.   From the Adriatic Sea all the way up to the foothills of the breathtaking Alpes, this region of Italy seriously has it all:  breathtaking landscapes, outrageously good food, world-class wines, and of course, the spectacular and romantic city of Venice!!

Imagine sailing up the Grand Canal in Venice heading towards Piazza San Marco!   We’ll get off the boat and wander the meandering streets, stroll through the fruit, vegetable and incomparable fish market near the Rialto Bridge and grab a glass of prosecco and sample some traditional Venetian cicchetti (small bites of Venetian tapas) at a few wine bars. Venice is one of my very favorite cities in the world and we’ll be sure to take full advantage on our time there together.

Our home for the week is the La Foresteria di Serego Alghieri, an unparalleled villa estate in the beautiful Valpolicello countryside. From the time we enter this walled estate and drive down the cypress-lined road that leads us to our elegant home for the week. This is the first villa that where I began teaching 20 years ago and it’s still is one of my absolute favorites.

The villa kitchen is gorgeous and we’ll have fun cooking together during hands-on cooking classes. We’ll make the specialties of the region, such as Risotto with Amarone, Shellfish Salad with Salsa Verde, and almond and polenta cookies called “sbrisolona”.  To top it off, we have to make the infamous milkshake made with vanilla ice cream, lemon sorbet, prosecco, freshly squeezed lemon juice and vodka!

There is so much more to explore in this incredible region.  And there’s so much great food to cook!  You'll perfect your risotto-making skills with a local rice grower and we'll enjoy lunch al fresco overlooking the vineyards at the villa of my friend, Carlo Nirozzi, a wonderful film producer who happens to also make the best white wine or the region, Custoza.

Oh, and speaking of wine, of course, we’ll taste the delicious Amarone wines from our very own Masi Estate and we’ll visit my dear friend Chiara at Coffele wine for a Soave Superiore tasting. I can’t wait to explore this beautiful region of Northeastern Italy with you!
