6 fresh tips (and recipes!) to get you through winter
6 fresh tips (and recipes!) to get you through winter
It's hard to think about keeping it fresh with fruits and vegetables when 3 feet of snow has just been dumped on you! But winter is one of the best times to cook flavorful dishes, that are good for you, too. I've got a few tricks that use ingredients that you can find almost anywhere right now. And the best part? They'll give you the fresh flavor that you're craving!

  1. Embrace brassicas!! That's the fancy word for all these great healthy winter vegetables like kale, broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts, which are loaded with nutrients and this is the time of year when they're easy to find!!
  2. Citrus! A nice juicy orange will make cravings for sweets disappear and we all know that they're good for us. And what about blood oranges, kumquats, tangerines, lemons, limes and grapefruit?
  3. Get nutty. Grab a few almonds, walnuts, cashews, or pistachios next time you need a little something something. Toss them into your fruit smoothie or an escarole salad! Yummm!
  4. Grain Salads. If you come over to my house, you'll see. It is my go-to lunch almost every day. They're quick to make and so versatile, plus, you can incorporate tons of flavor, all in one bowl!
  5. Use canned tomatoes and forget about fresh tomatoes in winter. Please, I'm begging you:) Most fresh tomatoes taste bland this time of year, so if you want flavor, grab a can of great quality organic tomatoes. Take it from me, tomato salad is for summer only!
  6. And cook up lots of comforting roots. Next time you're at the farmer's market or grocery store, stock up on carrots, turnip, rutabaga, and beets. Roast a panful and eat them through the week.
